Sometimes someone may say that they received a target letter, or someone may ask “what is a target letter?” If the United States Attorney is doing a criminal investigation and they’re sending out subpoenas to people to come in and testify, there are some rules that require them to notify people if they’re going to be the target of the investigation.
So, if a person is going to be the target of the investigation where it is likely that that person is going to be indicted or charged with a crime, the government will send that person a target letter, which essentially is warning them that they’ve been subpoenaed, they have certain rights, and that they’re a target of the investigation. Now at that point, the individual could go in and testify or seek legal counsel and see if they should be testifying, and if so, how much testimony should they give.
If you receive a target letter, it’s very serious. It’s time to start speaking with a lawyer and start looking at your legal team to make sure that you protect yourself as much as possible, because you’ve been warned that the Federal Government is seeking to prosecute you.
