Sometimes the question comes up: what federal agencies make arrests for federal crimes? These are agencies that most people are familiar with: there’s the FBI (the Federal Bureau of Investigation). You also have the DEA, which deals with drug investigation, which is the Drug Enforcement Administration. You have DEA agents investigating things. Also the United States Postal Inspector is an investigative agency. The United States State Department also does investigations; they have a criminal investigation division which pertains to things such as immigration, immigrants being here; ICE, many times you see things about ICE which is the Immigration Criminal Enforcement division, which deals with immigration and those types of issues.
And there are others, there are several agencies out there, and sometimes they work together. For example, the FBI may also be involved in making a drug case. And then also, you have situations where crimes are committed or people are accused of crimes by State police and then those cases are later adopted and become federal cases for different reasons, there may be a factor there. So, you see that sometimes, especially in drug cases where the local drug authorities make a case but then they say that it’s going to federal court because the federal court is going to adopt it and make it into a federal case.
