If someone asks someone to explain car insurance, it seems straightforward, but it really isn’t. In South
Carolina, there are three types of car insurance as they pertain to injury and they’re very important:
First there’s liability coverage, which means if someone hits you and you sue that person, they have
insurance coverage for the harm that they caused, which was their fault.
The second type of coverage is called uninsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage is
coverage that you have on your policy in case the person that hits you has no insurance.
The third type, which is very important, is underinsured coverage. That’s something that you would have
in your insurance policy. So, if someone hits you and causes severe damages to you, and that person
only has $25,000 worth of coverage, and on your policy you have $100,000 worth of underinsured
coverage, then you add the two together and you would have $125,000 worth of coverage in your claim
based on your coverage and your policy. That’s something that very few people really understand.
